The Connected Home Project

ThinkPLANK is currently working with Intellect on the Connected Home Market Acceleration Report. The report is due to be published in November 2010.

What is the "Connected Home"?

For many years now, we have had collective visions and media references to the Smart Home, the home of the future, or the digital home. In the last decade, the significant addition to this thinking is the Internet and the range of services it enables.

At present, there are many vertical markets seeking to deliver services digitally, to the home. These include Media, Productivity & Communications, Smart Energy, Home Automation and Healthcare. Each market has distinct propositions, players, challenges, technologies and standards. However, they all go into the same home. And looking at it from the perspective of the home, what starts out being a bunch of goods, can quickly become a collective nightmare.

What are the risks of the connected home? What kind of network do we need to have? Where should we buy the connecting components? How do we string them together? Which ones are right for us? Can our home be hacked? How many passwords do we need to remember? Do I need a home server? How can we control our connected home? Who can I call if my TV is no longer connecting to my home server?  Do we have any say in this matter? How much money should I spend?

Clearly there are many problems, many of which can prove to be bottlenecks preventing the industry from moving forward. Our Connected Home project therefore focuses on Market Acceleration, to enable consumers to adopt services with confidence and for the industry to grow and flourish.

The Connected Home Council

The Council comprises industry leaders and significant players in the space, who have agreed to fund and guide the report and overall effort, and participate in the workstreams. The Council includes BBC, BSkyB, BT, CEDIA, Huawei, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm and Sony.

The Connected Home Report

The Report focuses on Market Acceleration and seeks to present the connected home landscape with all its challenges in a way that the issues are easy for anybody in the industry or government to understand. It will also identify specific areas around which it will make recommendations for policy, industry, or consumer related issues.

The Connected Home Workstreams

The Workstreams will pick up where the report leaves off and work to implement the recommendations made by the report.
